Mattias Härenstam

Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo

The pieces are loosely based on the Circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno, where the suicides are punished by being turned into a forest of tormented human trees. But if Dante's "Suicide Forest" stand firmly planted in medieval Italy, Härenstam's trees belongs to another time and place: Elements of IKEA-furniture and details that seem to come from a bourgeois home, point to the modern welfare state. In that respect these sculptures are a kind continuation of themes also evident in Härenstam's installation piece Diary of the Unknown Consumer (2008).
